When an emotion arises, just watch it move through your body, your mind and spirit.  If you get caught in the emotion, it takes energy away, but just watch and observe, don't fight it.  I usually go through a procrss of what does it feel, taste, touch, look and sound like - exploring it sometimes takes me to a new level of understanding and then it never shows up again because I have fully embraced it.   So much depth and beauty in emotions.
